Social housing provider Riverside has embarked on an ambitious decarbonisation project aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of approximately 1,000 homes across the North West and Cumbria.
This work has been part funded by the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Wave 2.1 with support from The Riverside Group, and was awarded to Equans through a competitive tender process via our Decarbonisation Framework.
The project will deliver significant improvements in energy consumption for residents in areas including Liverpool, Runcorn, and Carlisle.
Work began in late 2023, and improvements include the installation of external wall insulation with a rendered finish, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, and the replacement of windows and doors.
Additionally, roofline extensions are being installed to enhance both the appearance and energy efficiency of these homes.
Properties were carefully selected based on several criteria, including their suitability for the proposed measures, and the potential to achieve a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) level C.
Riverside aims to ensure that the homes not only meet but exceed current energy efficiency standards, reducing heat loss by 30 to 40% and energy consumption by 40 to 50%.
Equans have substantial experience and a proven track record in delivering large-scale decarbonisation projects at scale.
Beyond the direct energy efficiency benefits, the project is also delivering significant social value.
Equans has committed to creating apprenticeships, including roles for an Apprentice Customer Liaison Officer, Trainee Site Manager, and trades apprentices. Local contractors are also being used where possible.
In addition, the project is providing 10 work experience placements, T-Level opportunities, and various community engagement activities, such as careers talks, volunteering at local organisations, and donating materials to community groups including a kickboxing club and a scout group.
Paul Towers, Framework Manager (Construction and Decarbonisation) at Fusion21, said: “This transformative project demonstrates the power of our Decarbonisation Framework in driving large-scale energy efficiency improvements.
“By selecting Equans through a rigorous procurement process and using the direct award route, Riverside has ensured rapid project mobilisation, delivering value for money and significant social value benefits to local communities.
“These improvements will result in residents enjoying warmer, more comfortable homes during the winter months, while also contributing to better health and wellbeing.”
The project is set to complete in April 2025.
